{"id":929,"date":"2017-12-02T22:39:11","date_gmt":"2017-12-02T22:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/home\/?p=929"},"modified":"2019-03-19T17:12:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T17:12:30","slug":"a-hike-around-rose-island-indiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/home\/travel-with-kids\/a-hike-around-rose-island-indiana\/","title":{"rendered":"Remnants of the past &#8211; a hike around Rose Island, Indiana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Instead of shopping on Black Friday, we decided to opt outdoors, and went hiking around a cool, old remnant of the roaring 20&#8217;s just outside of Louisville, Ky.&nbsp; &#8211; Rose Island at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.in.gov\/dnr\/parklake\/2986.htm\">Charlestown State Park<\/a> in Charlestown, Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>About 11 miles east of Jeffersonville along Highway 62, Charlestown State Park is one of the state&#8217;s newer parks, along the Ohio River.&nbsp; There are several nice hikes, both paved and rugged and a campground.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-942 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356-e1512253987900.jpg?resize=500%2C667\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\">A truly unique trail, we trekked Trail #3 to Rose Island, a former summer resort from the 1920&#8217;s and 30&#8217;s, where you can see the remains of a&nbsp; swimming pool, arches from a promenade, chimney from the dance hall, the concrete base of a fountain and even part of the enclosure where a black bear was once kept.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_944\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-944\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-944\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2362-e1512253732173-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2362-e1512253732173.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2362-e1512253732173.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2362-e1512253732173.jpg?w=1224&amp;ssl=1 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Signage at Rose Island<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are informative signs at each former facility &#8211; the landing where the steamboat brought visitors, the grand hotel, and cottages that have pictures and details about the resort in its former glory.&nbsp; And if you can crank it fast enough, there is a wind-up device that has audio recordings with additional insight.<\/p>\n<p>The Rose Island Island Resort was a victim of the epic Ohio River flood of 1937, one of the worst floods in U.S. history, displacing two-thirds of the Louisville area residents, and sending water miles inland around Indiana and Kentucky. The property was 10 feet under water and poles noting the water&#8217;s height are scattered about the trail.&nbsp; After the flood, they didn&#8217;t restore the buildings, and they were left to ruin.<\/p>\n<p>Access to Rose Island has only recently been restored, as the former suspension bridge that once took visitors there hasn&#8217;t been there for years.&nbsp; In 2011, the State moved an old iron truss bridge from Portersville, Indiana (western part of the State) across 14-Mile Creek so that those hiking around the park could get a glimpse into the past.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_940\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-940\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-940\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2345-1-e1512253769343-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2345-1-e1512253769343.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2345-1-e1512253769343.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2345-1-e1512253769343.jpg?w=1224&amp;ssl=1 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bridge across 14-Mile Creek to Rose Island<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Just a 2.2-mile trail, there is a steep hill to get down to the island.&nbsp; It was a good workout coming back up, and I could feel the burn.&nbsp; My fitness level was questioned after seeing my 7-year old skip up most of it without breathing heavy.&nbsp; The path is paved down to the bridge and is well-groomed around the Island, easy for little ones to walk without worrying about them tripping over roots or rocks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_943\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-943\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-943\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2357-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2357.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2357.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2357.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mapsmemoriesandmotherhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2357.jpg?w=1632&amp;ssl=1 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former swimming pool Rose Island<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The boys enjoyed learning a little bit of history about the Island and especially liked pretending to swim in the pool.
